It’s well known that once brain or nervous tissue is damaged, it often results in permanent damage, regardless of the severity. Medical science has yet to find a definitive solution to this challenge. However, there are now new methods to kick-start damaged nerves through various means, including pulsed radiofrequency (PRF).
Pulsed radiofrequency is a technique that uses pulses of electrical current along with radiofrequency to generate a magnetic current around a nerve, extending right up to the dorsal root ganglia (the “sentinel brain” within your spine). This stimulation can help the nerve to restart its normal function. Many chronic neuropathic pain conditions can be treated using PRF, mainly:
Postherpetic neuralgia
Post-laminectomy pain syndrome
Post-traumatic pain
Diabetic foot pain
Chronic headache
And many more
PRF comes in two types:
Involves the use of a needle to directly stimulate the nerve in the spinal cord which is also called Pulsed Radiofrequency Ablation.
Uses a nerve stimulator applied to the skin’s surface to trigger the nerve stimulus.
Both procedures can be safely performed by a Pain Physician with the necessary expertise. However, as this is an innovative and novel technique, its indications are still unclear. Patients considering these methods for pain relief may not always benefit. Hence, clinicians must be very selective in choosing patients for these procedures.
Given the novelty of PRF and the variability in outcomes, patient selection is crucial. Clinicians must carefully evaluate whether a patient is a good candidate for PRF based on their specific pain condition and overall health. If you are suffering from chronic pain or know someone who might benefit from this technique, feel free to contact me for further details.
